Yen’s Ip Man remains righteous throughout, and occasionally gifts the other characters (and us) with nuggets of wisdom. The film glances at some of the genre’s most common tropes, including the rivalry between martial arts schools and the staging of illegal and dangerous fighting matches for gambling purposes. Ip Man and other parents fight back, and there are a few subplots, one featuring a corrupt cop. A gang of thugs attacks the school attended by the son - they are working for an American who wants to develop the property. It’s 1959, and Ip Man has settled down in Hong Kong with his wife and son. Martial arts films are basically action melodramas, and that’s true here.
